How To Get A Motorcycle License

| Motorcycle Blog | October 12, 2011

So you’ve decided to buy a motorcycle?  Good choice but now you will need to get a motorcycle license in order to drive the bike you purchase.

In the US, motorcycle licenses are issued by the state in which the driver lives. There are some variations in rules and regulations from state to state, but in general, the process is nearly the same across the country. A motorcycle license granted in one state is recognized and valid in other states as well, so as long as you have a valid license and are of age, you’re good to go!

Motorcycle licenses cover motorcycles only. Many people have a regular diver’s license along with their bike license, but it is not required. It varies by state, but usually a motorcycle license is not required to drive a bike with a small engine (between 50 and 250 CC, depending on the state,) mopeds, scooters and other such small bikes.

So, how does one go about getting a motorcycle license?

First, you will need to write a written test. You can get a copy of the driver’s manual from your local DMV or Government office that issues licenses, or you may be able to download it from the DMV’s website. Read and study the manual carefully, noting safety regulations, road rules, laws and other important topics that will be on the test and are also essential for safe bike riding.

When you feel you are ready to write the test, you will make an appointment to write it. If you pass the written test, you will be granted a learner’s permit that will allow you to take the Motorcycle Safety Course in your state and go on to take your road test when you are ready.

In many states the Motorcycle Safety Course is not mandatory to obtain a license, but it is a very good idea to take it anyway. You will learn invaluable lessons that may save your life at some point. It will also help you prepare for your road test, practicing things like figure-eights, driving around pylons, stopping and starting safely and general riding tips. If you’re thinking of skipping the safety course, reconsider. Just about anyone you talk to who has taken it will recommend it.

Once you’ve completed the course, you will be ready to take your road test. You will be asked to perform a variety of tasks on your bike, such as the figure-eights, pylon navigation, etc. that you practiced during the course. If you pass, you will be issued some sort of motorcycle license that will allow you to legally drive your bike. I say “some sort of license” simply because just about every state is different in regards to the actual licensing, with many states using a graduated licensing system. The graduated systems vary, but in general, they impose certain restrictions on your driving for the first year. Some restrictions are: having no passengers, riding only smaller bikes (less than 500 CCs,) not driving at night, etc. You will need to check the laws in your state to determine if graduated licensing applies to you or not.

Once you have your license, you’ll get to enjoy the feel of the open road in a way you’ve never imagined! Have fun and ride safe!

What To Look For When Buying A Used Motorcycle

Why Buying Used Motorcycles is Better

Why is buying used motorcycles the better way to go? First would be the cost. Imagine buying a used Ducati at half the price of the original. What more when you buy an affordable scooter for nearly a few bucks and a pat on the back? Second would be the choices that are being provided. In a dealership, you get the advantage of having all kinds of motorcycles and models in one place. That practically takes of all the hassles of having to shop from one place to another just to find that one special motorcycle that you want to ride on. The third and the last one, which can be subject to the following ways employed in finding a motorcycle, is the quality. As you will read further, you will find this a very credible claim when buying used motorcycles.

Buying a Used Motorcycle Means Effort on Your Part

Its great to know that you can buy a motorcycle at an affordable price, even as the demand for such these days have steadily increased. No doubt, used motorcycles are the best way to go if you are in the market and shopping for one. But before going and buying the best looking one from the bunch of used motorcycles, you have to first know what to do.

It is important that you know that the dealer is credible when it comes to motorcycle sales. The best way to buy a motorcycle is to go online and shop from there. Why? You get the most important advantage when it comes to knowing which of the dealerships actually have any records of past sales. This is where comment boxes and forums come in handy. Look at trending topics about some of the more known dealerships in the market and see if there is anything you like. When going online, you get to kill two birds with one stone. Other than getting the best comments, you also get to do your shopping from there.

Also, you also have to watch out for the other things that come with your used motorcycle purchase. You may be baited to buy a motorcycle just because it is outrageously cheap. What you don’t know is that they may not have included any warranty, service charges, or other annoying fees.

Buy Your Used Motorcycle From A Private Party

This is the best way to go and usually the cheapest option.  When buying a used bike from a private party you have the chance to see all of the service records.  You can also get to know the rider of the bike. He or she can tell you exactly how the bike handles, if it has ever been laid over (crashed), and what service or performance modifications have been done to it.  When you browse through motorcycles for sale online we are quite sure that you will find the motorcycle you are looking for, at a cost that can’t be beat!
