So you’ve decided to buy a motorcycle? Good choice but now you will need to get a motorcycle license in order to drive the bike you purchase.
In the US, motorcycle licenses are issued by the state in which the driver lives. There are some variations in rules and regulations from state to state, but in general, the process is nearly the same across the country. A motorcycle license granted in one state is recognized and valid in other states as well, so as long as you have a valid license and are of age, you’re good to go!
Motorcycle licenses cover motorcycles only. Many people have a regular diver’s license along with their bike license, but it is not required. It varies by state, but usually a motorcycle license is not required to drive a bike with a small engine (between 50 and 250 CC, depending on the state,) mopeds, scooters and other such small bikes.
So, how does one go about getting a motorcycle license?
First, you will need to write a written test. You can get a copy of the driver’s manual from your local DMV or Government office that issues licenses, or you may be able to download it from the DMV’s website. Read and study the manual carefully, noting safety regulations, road rules, laws and other important topics that will be on the test and are also essential for safe bike riding.
When you feel you are ready to write the test, you will make an appointment to write it. If you pass the written test, you will be granted a learner’s permit that will allow you to take the Motorcycle Safety Course in your state and go on to take your road test when you are ready.
In many states the Motorcycle Safety Course is not mandatory to obtain a license, but it is a very good idea to take it anyway. You will learn invaluable lessons that may save your life at some point. It will also help you prepare for your road test, practicing things like figure-eights, driving around pylons, stopping and starting safely and general riding tips. If you’re thinking of skipping the safety course, reconsider. Just about anyone you talk to who has taken it will recommend it.
Once you’ve completed the course, you will be ready to take your road test. You will be asked to perform a variety of tasks on your bike, such as the figure-eights, pylon navigation, etc. that you practiced during the course. If you pass, you will be issued some sort of motorcycle license that will allow you to legally drive your bike. I say “some sort of license” simply because just about every state is different in regards to the actual licensing, with many states using a graduated licensing system. The graduated systems vary, but in general, they impose certain restrictions on your driving for the first year. Some restrictions are: having no passengers, riding only smaller bikes (less than 500 CCs,) not driving at night, etc. You will need to check the laws in your state to determine if graduated licensing applies to you or not.
Once you have your license, you’ll get to enjoy the feel of the open road in a way you’ve never imagined! Have fun and ride safe!
